An operation by the Guardia di Finanza and the Italian customs authorities in Ancona has revealed a case of illegal traffic of hazardous waste to Albania.
An Italian company was trying to illegally ship over 16 tons of waste to Albania, sending it in a truck to be loaded onto a ferry from Ancona to Durrës.
After a risk analysis, the authorities discovered inaccuracies in the shipment documentation and, after detailed inspection, found that the cargo was waste, which was part of the list that required stricter controls, as well as prior authorization from the receiving country, which did not could have been given since Albania has banned the import of this type of waste, Italian media write.
After the expertise of the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (Arpam), the waste was classified as a risk for the environment and the preliminary cleaning procedure was not carried out. As a result, 16 tons of textile waste were seized, worth several thousand euros. For this event, the director of the exporting company was charged with illegal trafficking of waste and falsification of documents. (A2 Televizion)
