It was initially reported that a loud noise within the perimeter of the prison in Fushë-Krujë could have been caused by a generator fault, but investigations revealed that it was a TNT explosion.
The event occurred on Wednesday evening. It's just that state institutions themselves are unclear about the time it happened. The State Police's official announcement about the explosion states that the police were notified by phone call at around 10:45 p.m. While the General Directorate of Prisons itself said that the explosion occurred around 9:00 p.m.
Investigators discovered that unidentified individuals threw the explosive from outside the enclosure. The quantity was small and homemade with nitrate. The TNT fell near the generator and about 200 meters from the prison administration headquarters.
The area where the explosive was thrown lacks lighting, while security cameras around the area have been seized to help identify the perpetrator.
The investigations have extended to at least two leads. The first is suspected to have been carried out to create noise for a possible escape attempt. While the second lead that is being verified concerns the suspicions whether any of the prisoners had a conflict with other people in the prison administration and may have ordered the shooting from outside.
This event raises questions about security in prisons, but the directorate of this institution itself, in a reaction to the media, stated that the security of the convicts or detainees was not compromised, as according to them, the place where the explosive material was thrown is an area that does not affect them.
