With 502 votes in favor, the European Parliament approves the 2023-2024 Report

Through a post on her Facebook page, Spiropali describes this as an important political and institutional assessment of Albania's progress for the years 2023 and 2024.

Spiropal's post:

With 502 votes in favor, the European Parliament confirms support for Albania's EU membership based on merit and reforms.

Following a debate held the day before and following the approval on June 4, 2025 by the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the European Parliament approved today, July 9, in a plenary session in Strasbourg, the report on Albania's progress for the years 2023 and 2024.

This report constitutes an important political and institutional assessment of Albania's progress on the path towards membership in the European Union and confirms the broad support that the enlargement process enjoys in the European Parliament.

We welcome the European Parliament's report, appreciate its constructive and supportive role, and thank the MEPs for closely following developments in Albania and the Balkan region.

In particular, I would like to reiterate our gratitude to the rapporteur for Albania, Andreas Scheider, for his single-minded commitment, his objective and balanced approach to both the achievements and the challenges ahead, and above all, his cooperation and joint efforts.

We appreciate the encouraging language of the report, both in its clear reflection of Albania's reforms and achievements in the last two years, as well as in the areas where we need to do more, faster, and better.

This report comes at an important moment, as Albania is advancing resolutely, in fact in an unprecedented manner - as Commissioner Kos herself emphasized in the session of 8 July - on the path to membership in the European Union, in full accordance with both the aspirations of the Albanian people and the fundamental values of the European Union, to further strengthen democracy, the rule of law, the protection of human rights, good governance, the fight against organized crime and corruption, the strengthening of public administration and freedom of the media.

The report recognizes the progress Albania has made in fulfilling the conditions for opening and advancing in the negotiating chapters and calls on EU institutions and member states to maintain a merit-based, fair and predictable approach towards Albania.

We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to continue at an even faster pace the reforms necessary for membership and to cooperate closely with the institutions of the European Union and consider the report an important political message, which fully coincides with the clear message that Albanian citizens gave with their vote in the elections of May 11, to walk resolutely on the path of European integration.

We are aware of and fully committed to the rigorous and transformative nature of the accession process and to the need for even closer and deeper cooperation with all European institutions, including the European Parliament, and in this context we also welcome recommendations to further deepen reforms, to bring concrete benefits to Albanian citizens and to contribute to the strengthening and unity of the European Union.
