However, the home side struggled in the first half, failing to exploit the visitors' weak defence. Curtis Jones missed a good chance, while Núñez tested goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale but failed. The surprise came in the dying seconds of the first half, when a misunderstanding between Van Dijk and Alisson allowed Will Smallbone to score his first Premier League goal.
