Brazil have decided to sack coach Dorival Jr. The news was confirmed by the football federation, CBF, after the five-time world champions were thrashed 4-1 by rivals Argentina in Buenos Aires.
The humiliating defeat and poor performance, with fourth place in the World Cup qualifiers, a full 10 points behind the Albiceleste, brought about the inevitable decision. The coach was appointed to the head of the bench in January 2024.
The 62-year-old became the coach of the "selecao" that until then was suffering, because within a year two temporary coaches had been appointed. It all happened after the Brazilian Federation was heavily invested in the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti, who in the end decided to stay at Real Madrid.
"We are grateful for the work that Dorival has done with the national team," said president Ednaldo Rodrigues during the press conference. "We will also inform you shortly who will be his successor on the bench," he added.
The 62-year-old Dorival Jr. was appointed to Brazil after the success achieved with Flamengo in 2022, where he won the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Brasileiro, with the latter trophy he lifted again after a year at the helm of Sao Paulo.
However, the coach was unable to pull the "selecao" out of the crisis of play and results, to return the world giants to their identity. Dorival also failed to gain the trust of the very demanding Brazilian fans, as he won only 7 of the 16 matches he led the national team. (A2 Televizion)
