The extraordinary moment when a wounded Ukrainian soldier, who had been trapped behind enemy lines for several days, managed to escape thanks to an electric bicycle delivered to him by drone, has been captured on video.
Footage released by the Rubizh brigade of the Ukrainian National Guard shows a drone dropping the electric bicycle, weighing around 40 kilograms, on the wounded soldier, who is then seen cycling away from Russian forces.
Three members of the brigade were reportedly killed by enemy fire during the operation in the Siversk area of northern Ukraine, leaving the soldier alone for five days to defend the position.
He had also suffered a leg wound, which made it impossible for him to evacuate independently.
"The enemy was in front, behind and on both sides. Completely surrounded," said Mykola Hrytsenko, a junior lieutenant and the brigade's chief of staff, in a video released on Wednesday.
The soldier said his team devised an evacuation plan that included large transport drones to carry the electric bike to his position.
These types of drones are typically used by Ukraine as bombers, but can also carry heavy payloads.
Hrytsenko said two drones were initially lost during attempts to deliver the electric bike to the soldier, after the first was shot down by enemy fire and the second crashed after its engines burned out.
"It was impossible to approach with vehicles because the enemy was everywhere. He couldn't even get out on his own, because he had to walk 1.5 kilometers to the nearest position. In his condition, with the wounds and injuries to his lower limbs, he wouldn't have been able to make it," the announcement says. (A2 Televizion)
