What's it like to get out of a crashed plane alive? A passenger filmed the moment from the rescue operation at Toronto airport, where a Delta Air Lines plane crashed upside down, but fortunately none of the 80 people on board lost their lives.
The CRJ900 aircraft, operated by Endeavor Air, a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, crashed at around 2:15 p.m. local time. Despite the nature of the accident, fortunately there were no fatalities. Among the injured was a child, but according to Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto, he is in good condition.
Airport fire chief Todd Aitken described the emergency crews' response as "exemplary," helping to avoid loss of life.
Witnesses describe dramatic moments
Passenger Pete Koukov said everything seemed normal until the plane touched down. “We felt like we were falling sideways and then we were upside down, hanging like bats,” he said. John Nelson, another passenger, said he felt a powerful impact and described the scene as “chaotic.” “I saw a big ball of fire coming out of the left wing of the plane,” he said.
Investigations continue.
The accident occurred on a day with strong winds and snowfall, however the runway was dry and free of strong air currents. Canadian and US authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
Two runways at the airport will remain closed for several days to allow for full investigations by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the Federal Aviation Administration in the US. (A2 Televizion)
