North Korea is getting ready to open the Wonsan-Kalma seaside resort to foreign tourists. This ambitious project of dictator Kim Jong-un has faced numerous delays since the beginning of construction, but is finally expected to open this summer, writes A2 CNN.

The resort, built on an old missile base, was inspired by a study mission to Spain in 2017. However, the construction has encountered difficulties, including overcrowding by homeless people, who littered the empty hotel premises.

Despite this, Russian travel company Vostok Intur has started selling holiday packages for July and August, priced at around €1,800 for a week. British travel platform On The Beach set up a registration page to gauge interest and was surprised when 250 people from the UK expressed a desire to visit the resort, The Sun reported.

However, experts warn that vacationing in North Korea can be dangerous and unethical. Greg Scarlatoiu, director of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, points out that the resort was built with forced labor and recalls tragic cases such as that of Otto Warmbier, the American student who died after being brutally detained by North Korean authorities.

The British Foreign Office also advises against non-essential travel to this country, warning of harsh penalties for minor actions, such as disrespecting images of North Korean leaders.

While interest from some Britons remains high, it remains unclear whether Western tourists will be officially allowed to visit the resort in the near future. (A2 Televizion)
