The most expensive whiskey in the world is being sold at auction, an unimaginable figure

A rare bottle of whiskey has sold for $2.7 million, breaking the record for the most expensive wine or spirit ever sold at auction.

The Macallan 1926 is one of the world's most sought-after bottles of Scotch whisky. It was sold by Sotheby's auction house on Saturday for more than double the price it was expected to fetch.

This whiskey spent 60 years maturing in dark oak casks before becoming one of only 40 bottles of its kind in 1986.

The 40 bottles were reportedly never made available for purchase, but were offered to key customers of The Macallan.

And whenever any of the bottles have been auctioned over the years, there have been extraordinary results. A similar bottle was sold in 2019 for £1.5 million.

Speaking last month ahead of the auction, Sotheby's chairman Fowle said The Macallan 1926 is the one whiskey every auctioneer wants to sell and every collector wants to own.
