Actor Richard Chamberlain passes away

Renowned actor Richard Chamberlain died Saturday at the age of 90, his publicist announced. According to a statement from his publicist Harlan Boll, Chamberlain passed away in Hawaii due to complications from a stroke, A2 CNN reports. The "Thorn Birds" star would have turned 91 on Monday.

During his long career, Chamberlain distinguished himself as an actor, singer, soldier, painter and author. However, he first gained fame in the 1960s with the role of a charming young doctor in the series "Dr. Kildare", turning himself into a television icon.

He continued to win the hearts of audiences with prominent roles in the miniseries "Shogun" and "The Thorn Birds," which earned him two Golden Globe Awards.

Richard Chamberlain was born in Los Angeles, California and raised in Beverly Hills with his parents and older brother, Bill. He graduated with a degree in fine arts from Pomona College. After graduation, Chamberlain joined the U.S. Army and served 16 months in Korea, where he attained the rank of sergeant.
