Social media platform X was down for nearly 12,000 users on Monday, and its owner Elon Musk said the outage was the result of a cyberattack.
"There was (and is still) a massive cyberattack against (platform) X. We have attacks every day, but this time it was done with a lot of support, either from a large, coordinated group and/or one country," Mr. Musk wrote in a post.
A source in the internet infrastructure industry said that X had been affected by several service outages starting in the morning hours.
The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. Blocking is caused when multiple websites target a platform, artificially increasing traffic.
Such attacks are not necessarily sophisticated, but they can cause significant disruption.
X was facing outages according to 'Downdetector', denying 11,745 users in the US access to the platform.
The number of reported outages rose to about 26,579, data submitted by users to the website that records outages showed.
Earlier in the day, the number reached 40,000 at one point./ Voice of America (A2 Televizion)
