Private probe "Blue Ghost" lands on the moon

A private probe, equipped with a vacuum cleaner, a drill and other experimental equipment for NASA, landed on the lunar surface on Sunday, the latest mission by a number of companies aiming to conduct lunar exploration before major manned missions.

Firefly's Blue Ghost probe descended from lunar orbit towards a crater on what is known as the closest part of the moon to Earth, or the part that is always facing our planet and can be seen with the naked eye.

The mission control center in Texas confirmed the successful landing of the probe. The Blue Ghost probe, carrying the emir of a rare species of firefly, was launched from Florida in January on a SpaceX rocket.

Two other companies are expected to launch similar missions in the coming weeks. The new missions to space come ahead of NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon and its ambitions to expand deep space exploration. VOA (A2 Televizion)
