But according to scientists, it could become a reality if the newly discovered asteroid collides with Earth. This could happen, at least theoretically, in less than eight years, but experts still see no reason to panic.
The ESA said that the calculated probability of a distant asteroid impact often drops to zero after further observations. A similar scenario had already occurred in 2004: the probability of the asteroid Apophis hitting Earth in 2029 was initially 2.7 percent. Such a collision has now been ruled out.
The asteroid, which is 40 to 100 meters in diameter and is currently about 27 million kilometers from Earth, was automatically detected by a telescope on December 25.
If 2024 YR4 actually hits Earth, it could explode in the atmosphere and cause damage with a shock wave and heat, it said. It could also create a crater more than a kilometer in diameter.
According to the ESA, an asteroid of this size hits Earth on average every few thousand years. According to the IAWN, the impact area could be over the eastern Pacific, northern South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, the Arabian Sea or South Asia. (A2 Televizion)
