The world's largest cemetery, Wadi Al-Salam in Najaf, Iraq, is the "last home" of more than 6 million bodies, all piled into one ancient burial site.

The cemetery is visited by millions of pilgrims every year and contains the remains of prophets, kings and scientists.

When seen from above, the landscapes of Al-Salam can be mistaken for a city, with countless tombs that look like cramped buildings.

The cemetery occupies 13% of the size of Najaf and its size actually resembles a small city covering over 1500 hectares of land.

With more than six million bodies in it, the cemetery is larger in terms of population if you compare it to countries like Norway, Finland or Denmark.

The name Wadi Al-Salam translates to "Valley of Peace", but the history of the region has not been peaceful at all, as the number of those buried in this cemetery continues to grow as Iraq continues to remain the epicenter of military conflict.

At the height of the Iraq War, it was reported that around 250 bodies were buried there every day, while the narrow tombstones and mausoleums, as well as the vast network of underground catacombs made it the perfect place for insurgents to hide out.

During the 2004 conflict between the US military and Mahdi Army forces, the cemetery was a battleground for armed clashes. Many graves were damaged at that time by fire, gunfire and rocket attacks. (A2 Televizion)
