As evacuations continue on the famous island of Santorini and residents are leaving via ferry port and by air, seismologists are expressing concern about what will follow the terrible situation of the past week.
Professor of Tectonic Geology and Geodynamics, Dimitris Papanikolaou, speaking to Live News said that “we expect an earthquake close to 6 on the Richter scale.” He also added that the 5.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Wednesday evening cannot be considered a major earthquake.
"It is clear that the magnitude depends on Anydros, which is in the center of the stimulated zone, or the Ios fault, which is 2-3 kilometers further north. The Ios plate has a greater displacement. This has submerged the entire section with Colombo, which could well cause an earthquake of magnitude 6. Which is justified based on the earthquake activity that we have reached so far, at 5.2," he stressed.
Meanwhile, Gerasimos Papadopoulos stressed that "first indications show that the 5.2 on the Richter scale is a foreshock . "
"With this earthquake, more forces are being released within the sequence, which remains particularly intense," noted OASP president Efthymios Lekkas.
Seismologists may leave a "window" open for a gradual escalation of the phenomenon, but the ongoing seismic activity is increasingly pushing residents to decide to leave Santorini.
The images recorded on Thursday afternoon at the port of Santorini are characteristic, with residents, visitors and workers leaving the island with children, pets and suitcases.
According to official data from the Ministry of Insular Policy and the Coast Guard, 600 passengers and 178 vehicles departed from Santorini at 15:45. Total data, since the start of seismic activity until today, shows that 8140 people and 1554 vehicles have left Santorini by ship alone. (A2 Televizion)
