Bosnia heading for partition? Republika Srpska approves constitutional draft

The Parliamentary Assembly of Republika Srpska has approved a draft constitution that aims to declare the Serb entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina a state. With the new constitution, Republika Srpska leaders aim to define this entity as a state of the Serb people, grant it the right to self-determination, create its own army, and abolish the Council of Peoples and vice presidents from the other two constituent entities, writes A2 CNN.

This constitution is in conflict with the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and therefore with the Dayton Agreement. Since the Dayton Peace Agreement, which was signed in 1995 and ended the war in Bosnia, the country has been divided into the Bosniak-Croat Federation and the ethnic Serb-dominated Republika Srpska, under a weak central government.

The draft, which was approved with 50 votes in favor and eight against in Banja Luka, will go through a 30-day public debate, after which the Parliamentary Committee for Constitutional Affairs will draft a proposal that will then be debated again in the National Assembly. (A2 Televizion)
