Extreme heat hits Greece, Acropolis closed until Friday

Greece, like Albania, has been hit by an extreme heat wave, with temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius recorded this Tuesday across most of the Greek territory.

Tomorrow is expected to be the hottest day for many areas of mainland Greece, while the situation will be extremely difficult during the evening, as even at midnight in Athens temperatures between 34°C - 35°C will be recorded due to heat stress.

Due to the extreme heat wave, Greek authorities have decided that the gates of the Acropolis and other archaeological sites in Athens will remain closed during lunchtime, from today until Friday.

According to the official announcement of the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of the city of Athens, issued today, from 22/7/2025 to 25/7/2025 the archaeological sites of the Acropolis and Slopes, the Olympian, the Lyceum, the Roman Agora, the Ancient Agora and Hadrian's Library will remain closed during the period 12:00-17:00 due to high temperatures, for the safety of workers and visitors.
