With 160 votes in favor, Konstantinos Tassoulas was elected today as the new President of the Republic of Greece. He will be sworn in on March 13, when the term of the current President, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, ends.
The 156 New Democracy MPs led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and independents Marios Salmas, Haris Katsivardas and Pavlos Sarakis voted in favor of the former Speaker of the Assembly's candidacy for MP.
24 MPs were absent from the session. Meanwhile, the other three candidates received very few votes. Respectively, Tasos Giannitsis received 34 votes, Luka Katseli 29 votes and Kostas Kyriakou 14 votes.
Konstantinos Tassoulas said after the election that for him it is a great honor and responsibility to assume the new duty as President of the Republic.
He called for "social cohesion" and added that "Greece and Greeks have demands for national security, prosperity and civil protection, fairer justice than today's . "
Tasoulas also stressed that despite international turmoil, it is important to strengthen defense and diplomatic capabilities and social cohesion within the EU. In a unifying climate, he also urged that " despite individual disagreements, the invisible thread that unites Greece must not be broken ."
"It is a supreme honor but above all a great responsibility. By participating in public life, I am aware of the political opportunities that popular sovereignty brings to light. To project opportunities for our homeland, regardless of ideology, and the people as a whole to progress. I also know the weaknesses of politics. Only with national effort and social cohesion can we address them. The search for social consensus through dialogue and solutions that convince the many that criticisms are corrected in reformist politics. The rhythm of the world as we knew it does not seem to continue the same. The country is asked to increase its prestige abroad. Despite individual disagreements, the invisible thread that unites us must not be broken. It is the invisible thread that unites us when we mobilize for a common goal or to prevent a common evil," said Tassoulas. (A2 Televizion)
