Following the resignation of Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević amid massive anti-corruption protests, President Aleksandar Vučić has raised the possibility of holding early elections in April. In a televised speech on Tuesday evening, Vučić said his party would take 10 days to decide whether to form a new government after consultations with all parties or whether to go to elections. According to him, the possibility of creating an interim transitional government is not on the table… The statement marks a significant turning point for Vučić, whose party easily won early elections in 2023 but has recently been under constant pressure.

"Once Vučević's resignation is confirmed, a 30-day period begins during which the necessary procedures for the election of a new government will take place. If the government is not formed within 30 days, early elections will be called ," Vučić said.

Vucevic's resignation has prompted the opposition to demand the formation of an interim government. Kreni-Promeni's party wants it to be composed of experts approved by the students who started the protests, while calling on other opposition parties not to boycott the elections, if they are held.

Prime Minister Vucevic became the highest-ranking official to resign after public anger erupted over the collapse of a concrete shelter at a Novi Sad railway station, killing 15 people. The station had undergone renovations twice and citizens blame widespread government corruption.

What initially started as small gatherings have spread across the country, as thousands of students, teachers, and other employees have systematically taken to the streets.

Vucevic claims that the government has met all of the protesters' demands, including the publication of documents related to the station's renovation, but the demonstrators have vowed not to stop.
