Croatia intends to restore compulsory military service

The Croatian government has announced plans to bring back compulsory military service, aiming to include young people in basic military training. The Ministry of Defense has prepared a package of legal proposals that regulate this process.

According to the ministry, the procedures for the approval of the law are expected to start in January, while the first calls for recruits are planned for the middle of 2025.

Defense Minister Ivan Anushič stated that every year around 17,000 to 18,000 young people turning 18 will be potential candidates for military training.

The Croatian President, Zoran Milanovic, has not openly opposed this initiative, but has requested that it be discussed in a session of the Defense Council to analyze all aspects.

Croatia thus follows a regional trend, as Serbia, another Balkan country and candidate for EU membership, announced plans for the return of compulsory military service earlier this year. (A2 Televizion)
