The Department for Combating Organized Crime and Serious Crimes at the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) in North Macedonia has filed a criminal complaint against a suspect with the initials Lj.B from the city of Skopje, for committing the criminal offense of "participation in foreign armies, police, paramilitary or parapolice formations."
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, from September 2023, the defendant Lj.B together with a denounced with the initials T.Sh, now deceased, applied for an open competition for participation in the Russian army through the 'Telegram' application, where a monthly salary of 3,000 euros was offered.
"After obtaining a travel visa, both went to Russia, and on September 23, 2024, signed an agreement with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Donetsk People's Republic for service in their military, paramilitary and parapolice units, and thus took part in the military conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine," the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement, referring to what Russia considers the Donetsk republic, but which it does not recognize. from any country in the world.
During a police operation, on December 9 of this year, a raid was carried out at the house of the defendant Lj.B, where computers, mobile phones, tactical clothing, documents in Russian in his name, as well as items were found and confiscated. others suspicious.
Due to these evidences, the suspect has been placed under house arrest for a period of 30 days.
Although there is no exact data regarding the number of citizens from North Macedonia who may be fighting alongside Russian soldiers, this is not the first case.
On October 5 of the same year, another Macedonian citizen with the initials JK had traveled from Skopje International Airport, through Belgrade, towards Moscow, to join the Russian army. However, six days later, he was back in the country, and was interviewed by police officials.
According to the Criminal Code of North Macedonia, the participation of Macedonian citizens in the war for foreign armies is considered a criminal offense and is punishable by four to six years of imprisonment.
