The fate of Aleksandar Vučić as president of Serbia will depend on a referendum. Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić will submit 100 signatures from ruling majority MPs on Wednesday for a popular vote of confidence in the president.

In fact, it seems that Vučić himself requested the referendum. In a video posted on his social media, the Serbian president says that the Belgrade-based non-governmental Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability, Crta, recently published the results of a survey, according to which the majority of Serbs are in favor of leaving office.

"The objective and impartial line informed the public that the vast majority of citizens are in favor of my departure. There is no more reliable source for either the international community or the political parties in Serbia. I fought for the people and the people are my strength. If these allegations are true, it is impossible for me to remain in the position of president of Serbia," the Serbian president said.

For the opposition in Serbia, this "is another attempt by the regime to organize a referendum without fulfilling the electoral conditions, bringing in fake voters again" and distorting the result.

It is also considered an attempt by Vučić to once and for all end the student protests demanding justice for the 15 people who lost their lives in Novi Sad after the collapse of a shelter at a train station. (A2 Televizion)
