Serbian students protest in the streets of Belgrade

Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters filled the streets of Belgrade on Sunday, flashing cellphone lights and holding a 15-minute silence in honor of the victims of a train station roof collapse, an accident blamed on the authorities.

The protest was organized and led by the students of the state university of the Serbian capital, who demand that the persons responsible for the accident be brought to justice, reports A2.

They blame the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) of President Aleksandar Vucic for corruption and nepotism. The Serbian president and his party have denied the accusations.

State university students in Belgrade, Kragujevac and Nis have suspended classes for weeks demanding the publication of all documents related to the renovation of the collapsed station, as well as the prosecution of the officials responsible for the disaster.

Every day in front of their faculties, students block traffic for 15 minutes to commemorate the 15 victims.

The recently renovated concrete roof canopy of the train station collapsed on November 1, killing 14 individuals and injuring three others. One injured person died later.

Opposition leaders and Serbian citizens have held ongoing protests, saying the accident was the result of government corruption and nepotism.

The coalition government denies the accusations, while President Vucic has said that the individuals responsible must be held accountable.

"We have been dissatisfied for years. We are here to express our revolt against the authorities and to support the students," said protester Tamara Kovacevic. / Voice of America (A2 Televizion)
