Russia's aggression in Ukraine highlights the urgency to help Western Balkan states achieve their aspirations for European integration and membership in Euro-Atlantic institutions.
This is what a spokesperson for the US Department of State told Radio Free Europe, answering the question of whether the US shares the concern with the European Union regarding President Volodymyr Zelensky's statement that Moscow wants to incite conflict in the Western Balkans.
" The states of the Western Balkans and all the states in Europe have a great interest in the outcome of Russia's war against Ukraine, a war that threatens the foundations of international order and security. Therefore, it is essential that we continue to stand together in the face of Russia's aggression. "
Earlier in the week, Zelensky told African media that he has evidence of Moscow's intentions to start a war between Western Balkan states. The EU also agreed to such goals of Moscow.
EU spokesman, Peter Stano, stated that the bloc for a long time has said that Russia is trying to exert malignant influence in the Western Balkans as well.
DASH said Washington is working with Western Balkan countries and European partners to advance governance, rule of law and anti-corruption reforms "that will reduce the possibility of Russian malign influence and bring long-term peace, stability and prosperity for the region ".
According to the spokesman, the sanctions announced by the Treasury Department on Thursday are aimed precisely at combating the nexus of Russian malign influence and corruption. (A2 Televizion)
