Serbian students launch political ultramarathon to Brussels, seek to attract

Demonstrators in Serbia are trying to attract international attention. Following the group of cyclists in Strasbourg, a group of runners are now heading to Brussels.

A group of Serbian students set off on a political ultramarathon to Brussels on Friday (25.04). They plan to cover almost 2,000 kilometers in 18 days to inform representatives of the EU Parliament about the political situation in the country. Serbia has been rocked by months of mass protests against the government of President Aleksandar Vučić. They began after a deadly train accident at the Novi Sad train station in November 2024.

According to Serbian media, the group consists of 21 students. The runners, who will travel through six countries, including Austria and Germany, are accompanied by a vehicle. As they set off from Novi Sad on Friday morning, one of the participants said they were running for a "better and more democratic Serbia."

Cyclists in Strasbourg

Just a week and a half ago, a group of 80 Serbian students who set off by bicycle from Novi Sad met in Strasbourg with representatives from the EU and the Council of Europe.

The atmosphere in Serbia continues to be tense. Students, who have been organizing the largest protests in Serbia's history in recent months, accuse the Vučić government of corruption, lack of media freedom and authoritarian leadership./ REL (A2 Televizion)
