Sorensen heads to Belgrade after visit to Pristina

The European Union's envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Peter Sorensen, made an unannounced visit to Kosovo on Thursday, from where he said he will travel to the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

On his second visit to Pristina, Sorensen met with Kosovo's chief negotiator for the dialogue, Besnik Bislimi.

Asked about the visit, Sorensen briefly told reporters that "we are working" and that he was in Kosovo as required by his duties as the bloc's envoy, A2 reports.

"It's a normal visit, as you can see. I'm happy to be here and now I'm going to Belgrade and then I'll go back to Brussels," he said.

The acting government of Kosovo said in a media release that Bislimi and Sorensen discussed the implementation of various technical-level agreements.

"The importance of starting discussions on the implementation of the Brussels Agreement and the Ohrid Implementing Annex within the framework of the dialogue process was also emphasized," the announcement states.

Previously, Sorensen had met with the commander of the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, Enrico Barduani.

KFOR said in a Facebook post that they exchanged views on security developments across the region.

This was Sorensen's second visit to Kosovo since taking office in early February and came at a time when Kosovo is failing to constitute an Assembly and form a new Government more than two months after the February 9 elections.

During his first visit to Pristina in March, Sorensen had said that his priority was to schedule meetings between the two countries.

"Dialogue is about ensuring that there are meetings. Whether that means compromises or not is up to the parties to determine," Sorensen said during his visit to Pristina in March.

The last meeting in Brussels, mediated by the European Union, between Kosovo and Serbia, was held on December 17th of last year.

European Union chief Kaja Kallas said earlier this month that the EU is addressing the mistakes in the Brussels dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia in order to reinvigorate the process of normalizing relations between the two neighboring countries.

Asked about the stalled dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Kallas said that "what we are doing this month is analyzing" together with Sorensen.

"What is important for us is the normalization of relations, because without this neither of them can move forward on the path towards the EU," Kallas said.

Kallas did not provide further details on what he thinks were the mistakes or what has not gone well so far in the bloc-mediated dialogue.

Despite the dialogue developed over the years and the signing of agreements, the process has stalled and tensions have increased.

Under EU mediation, Kosovo and Serbia reached an agreement in 2023 on a path toward normalizing relations. But since then, the bloc has criticized both countries for failing to implement the agreement, despite it being binding on them.

Kallas, in an interview with Radio Free Europe on April 2, said that the European Union is interested in normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia, whether through dialogue or some other instrument.

The EU has consistently made it clear that the 2023 agreement is binding on both countries and that it is a condition on their path towards European integration./ REL (A2 Televizion)
