Vučić mandates a doctor to form the Serbian Government

Endocrinologist Gjuro Macut is the new mandate holder for the formation of the Serbian Government, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Sunday, April 6.

Vucic said that the new Serbian government will be elected on April 18.

Doctor Gjuro Macut has completed his specialization in endocrinology. He is the head of the department for tumors of the endocrine system at the Endocrinology Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Serbia.

"Dr. Gjuro Macut, an extremely courageous man, very calm, prudent, tolerant, patient and perhaps the greatest specialist in the field of endocrinology from Vienna to Istanbul," Vučić said.

The Serbian President previously held consultations with parliamentary parties on the new government's prime minister, which began on April 2.

The parliamentary opposition had previously warned that it would not participate in these consultations. They had proposed the formation of a transitional government, a proposal that was rejected by representatives of the government in Serbia.

After the consultations on April 3, the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Miloš Vučević, said that the coalition gathered around the SNS considers that new elections should not be announced, but a new government should be formed.

He stated that he would propose two candidates for prime minister to the Serbian president.

During the conference in Belgrade where he announced the prime minister-designate of the new Serbian government, he also announced that he will meet with US President Donald Trump in the US, likely in early May.

Otherwise, the Serbian Government has been in a technical mandate since March 19, when MPs in the Assembly approved Vučević's resignation from the post of Prime Minister, which marked the beginning of the 30-day period for electing a new executive.

Vučević had resigned a month and a half earlier, following the beating of a group of students by activists of the Serbian Progressive Party, who were blocking the work of faculties in Novi Sad.

The fall of the Serbian government, led by Miloš Vučević, occurred at the height of student-led anti-government protests. Student protesters have blocked dozens of universities across Serbia since late November 2024.

The focus of their demands, addressed to Serbian institutions, is the determination of legal and political responsibility for the deaths of 16 people from the collapse of the concrete shelter of the Railway Station in Novi Sad, on November 1 last year. /REL (A2 Televizion)
