Vucic announces victory in the elections, Albanians secure a seat in parliament

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has declared victory in the early parliamentary elections, saying that his party is heading towards an absolute majority. His Serbian Progressive Party won almost 47% of the vote in the December 17 election, which means 129 seats in Parliament, according to polls by the non-governmental organization Center for Free Elections and Democracy.

Overnight results from Serbia's 8,273 polling stations confirmed the ruling party's lead, although forecasts in the capital itself gave it a much narrower margin of victory of four points.

Vucic declared that "his Serbia should not be stopped"; the electoral list was going for 127 seats in the 250-seat National Assembly.

"My task was to do everything in my power to secure an absolute majority" he told supporters, even though he himself was not running for election.

He was accompanied by Prime Minister Ana Brnabič and Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik.

Branbiç earlier rejected the opposition's accusations of irregularities and vote buying, and SNS influence on voters, and at the same time accused the opposition parties of violating election rules.

In second place is the opposition coalition "Serbia against violence", with 23.1 percent of the votes or 63 seats.

Their biggest hope is to challenge the president's party in Belgrade in Sunday's local elections.

In third place is the Serbian Socialist Party, of the former Serbian Foreign Minister, Ivica Dacic, with 6.9 percent of the votes or 19 seats. Dacic has expressed willingness to cooperate with Vucic's party.

According to the polls, from the community lists, Shaip Kamberi has secured one seat for the Albanian community, the Alliance of Hungarians of Vojvodina is expected to win six seats, the coalition of Croats of Vojvodina three seats and the Russian Party has won one seat.

Serbia held extraordinary parliamentary, local and provincial elections on Sunday.

A total of 18 parties and alliances have competed to win the support of 6.5 million residents, with the right to vote, for representation in the 250-seat Parliament. The threshold to enter Parliament is 3 percent.

First, votes for Parliament are counted, then for provinces and local ones. (A2 Televizion)
