A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the coastal province of Esmeraldas in northwestern Ecuador, injuring at least 20 people and damaging dozens of buildings.
According to official data from the National Risk Management Service, the earthquake damaged about 60 buildings, including public institutions and businesses. Damage was also reported to road infrastructure and a main bridge connecting several communities in the area.
The earthquake was recorded about 8.4 kilometers from the city of Esmeraldas, the capital of the province of the same name. The tremors were felt in 10 of the country's 24 provinces, causing panic among citizens and temporary disruptions of electricity and communication services in some areas.
Local authorities have launched emergency operations to help the injured and further assess the damage. Rescue teams are on the ground, while the Ecuadorian government has appealed for calm and cooperation from citizens. (A2 Televizion)
