"20,000 troops from European countries are not enough" - Vance

The US vice president has received criticism for claiming that a military presence from "a random country" as part of a peacekeeping force in Ukraine will not be enough to ensure peace.

In an interview with Fox News, JD Vance said that the only way to bring about a lasting peace is to give Washington an economic stake in Ukraine's future.

"If you want real security guarantees, if you want to make sure that Vladimir Putin doesn't invade Ukraine again, the best security guarantee is to give the Americans economic interests in the future of Ukraine," he said.

"This is a better guarantee of security than 20,000 troops from a country that has not fought a war for 30 or 40 years," he said.

Despite Vance's claim, hundreds of UK service personnel were killed during combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Responding to Vance's comments, the UK's shadow defence secretary, James Cartlidge, said: "It is deeply disrespectful to ignore such service and sacrifice."

We recall that Sir Keir Starmer has said that the United Kingdom, France and Ukraine will work together on a peace agreement that could be presented to the US.

Countries committed to working together on this agreement would form a "coalition of the willing."

Countries in the coalition could end up sending soldiers to act as peacekeepers in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. (A2 Televizion)
