The man who burned a copy of the Quran in 2023, sparking violent protests in many Islamic countries, has been shot dead in Sweden. The news was announced by local police, while according to Swedish media, he is Salwan Momika, a 38-year-old Iraqi refugee who became known for publicly burning copies of the Quran in Stockholm.
The victim was shot dead in his apartment in Sodertalje, Swedish state broadcaster SVT reported. Five people have been arrested in connection with the murder investigation.
The murder occurred on Wednesday evening, when police were notified of gunshots at a house in the Hovsjö neighborhood. Inside the apartment, officers found Momika with gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital, but did not survive.
Salwan Momika organized several burnings of Islam's holy book in Sweden in 2023, sparking national controversy and raising anger in some Muslim nations, and the protests that followed helped fuel tensions over immigration from the Middle East and predominantly Muslim countries. (A2 Televizion)
