In another dramatic day for the island of Lampedusa, 670 migrants arrived on Thursday within a span of around ten hours.
Ten dinghies launched from the Libyan coast have been rescued at sea by patrol vessels, the Guardia di Finanza and the European agency Frontex.
The eleventh, a boat leaving from Monastir in Tunisia, managed to cross the sea alone and arrive at Cala Galera, on the coast of Lampedusa. On board were 49 people claiming to be from Guinea, Sudan and Nigeria. They were immediately stopped by the Italian carabinieri.
With these new arrivals, the total number of migrants in the Lampedusa reception center has reached 765 people.
This situation is further increasing the pressure on the already overcrowded capacities of reception structures, while local and national authorities are trying to manage the growing influx of migrants arriving from North Africa towards Italian shores. (A2 Televizion)
