Over 100 children fall ill after eating lunch where a dead snake was found

An Indian human rights organization is investigating reports that more than 100 children fell ill after eating a school lunch on which a dead snake was found.

According to reports, the chef served the lunch despite removing the dead animal from it, the National Human Rights Commission said in a statement.

The commission said it is believed that around 500 children were served the meal in the town of Mokama in the state of Bihar, in eastern India.

After the children started getting sick, locals blocked a road in protest.

Free school meals, known as the Midday Meal, were first introduced for children from poor families in the southern city of Chennai in 1925.

One of the largest such schemes in the world, it was introduced to combat hunger and increase school attendance. However, there have been complaints about poor food hygiene. (A2 Televizion)
