Spanish authorities have launched a full investigation after the deaths of seven people believed to be linked to the massive power outage that hit Spain and Portugal at midday on Monday.
In Taboadela, Galicia, three members of the same family, an elderly couple, aged 81 and 77, and their 56-year-old son, were found dead in their home. Preliminary investigations indicate that they died of carbon monoxide poisoning after using a generator as an alternative source of energy. One of the victims had respiratory problems, which may have worsened the situation.
Meanwhile in Madrid, a fire caused by a candle lit during a power outage killed a 52-year-old man in the Carabanchel neighborhood. The fire engulfed an apartment block, also injuring 13 others from smoke inhalation.
Three other deaths were recorded in the Galicia region: a 59-year-old man in Ferrol, an 80-year-old in Betanzos and an 86-year-old in Dumbria. Although the exact circumstances have not been disclosed, authorities are examining the possibility of a link to the power outage and its consequences on the health of these individuals.
