Sweden has been rocked by gunshots that have been recorded in the center of Uppsala, a university town about 70 km north of Stockholm.
The alarm was raised shortly after 5pm following several reports and a major police operation is currently underway at the scene. Witnesses who spoke to Sveriges Radio said they heard gunshots at least six times. The incident took place near a barbershop in a central square, not far from the train station.
Local media reported that several ambulances were at the scene and police confirmed that there were injured people, although details of their conditions were not yet known.
Other sources, on social media and some local radio stations, speak of several deaths, at least three.
All public transport in the area has been temporarily blocked. According to information given to the newspaper Aftonbladet, police are pursuing the suspected perpetrator, who fled the scene on an electric scooter, in central Uppsala.
A police helicopter has also been deployed to the area. The incident comes about three months after a gunman opened fire in February at the Risbergska campus in Örebro, near Stockholm, killing 10 people before killing himself. (A2 Televizion)
