Israel and Hamas are on the verge of a ceasefire between them. Sources close to the negotiating team in Cairo told Reuters that significant progress had been made in these talks. Egyptian sources told Reuters that there was a consensus for a long-term ceasefire in the besieged enclave, but several sticking points remained, including Hamas weapons.

Hamas has repeatedly said it was not willing to hand over its weapons, a key Israeli demand.

Earlier, the Egyptian state-affiliated Al Qahera News television reported that Egyptian intelligence chief Gen. Hassan Mahmoud Rashad would meet an Israeli delegation led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer on Monday in Cairo. The sources said the ongoing talks included Egyptian and Israeli delegations. Mediators Egypt and Qatar did not report on developments in the latest talks.

Meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza called on the International Court of Justice to pressure Israel to stop the war in the enclave and allow humanitarian aid.

Israel faced accusations of violating international law by refusing to allow aid into the Gaza Strip at the International Court of Justice, at the start of hearings in The Hague on Monday. Representatives from the UN and the Palestinians opened the hearings, which are being attended by dozens of countries over the course of a week.

Since March 2, Israel has completely cut off all supplies to the 2.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip, and food stockpiled during a ceasefire earlier this year has almost run out. (A2 Televizion)
