The trial of a 74-year-old retired surgeon accused of raping and sexually assaulting hundreds of young patients, many of whom were under anesthesia, began in Brittany, France, in the largest child sexual abuse case in France that has shocked the country.
Joel Le Scouarnec faces charges of aggravated rape and sexual assault against 299 minors, 256 of whom were under the age of 15. When Le Scouarnec took advantage of them, they were asleep or in the process of waking up.
The 74-year-old surgeon admitted his responsibility in most of the rapes and sexual assaults for which he will have to answer for 4 months in criminal court.
Already sentenced in 2020 in Saintes, in central-western France, to 15 years in prison for rape and violence against 4 children, including his two granddaughters, the former doctor is in the dock for events dating from the period between 1989 and 2014 in several hospitals in the west of the country, particularly in Brittany.
Investigators found traces of the victims, patients who were on average 11 years old when they suffered violence, by examining the surgeon's diaries and agendas, found in his home during a search in 2017. His very detailed writings showed the name, age and address of the victims, as well as the type of violence inflicted, often covered up by medical procedures. Le Scouarnec, in these years of investigation, is described as a "pedophile for decades". He faces an additional sentence of 20 years in prison. (A2 Televizion)
