IDF lands in West Bank, Hamas retaliates, halts release of Israeli hostages

Hamas will suspend the agreement to send Israeli hostages to Tel Aviv. This radical move by Hamas comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to halt the release of Palestinian prisoners. Negotiations through mediators cannot continue as long as Israel does not release 602 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the six Israeli hostages handed over by Hamas on Saturday, Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi wrote on Telegram.

However, as the German Press Agency learned from Hamas circles, no decision has yet been made. They said they were discussing things with mediators.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced on Sunday that the release of Palestinian prisoners as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement will be suspended. The reason given was that the Islamic terrorist organization must first ensure that it stops humiliating ceremonies marking the release of Israeli hostages.

The decision could lead to Israel's withdrawal from the ceasefire agreement, the Times of Israel newspaper reported. According to Israeli sources, 63 hostages are still being held by Islamists in the Gaza Strip, but only 27 of them are said to be alive.

Meanwhile, the US special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, announced that he is expected to travel to the Middle East on Wednesday. He has appointments in Israel, Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. He is working to negotiate an extension of the first phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the next round of talks between Israel and Hamas, he told US broadcaster CNN.

Meanwhile, Israel sent tanks into the West Bank for the first time in more than 20 years, while ordering the army to prepare for an “extended standoff” to fight Palestinian militant groups in the area’s refugee camps. The move came after a fragile ceasefire in Gaza hit new hurdles after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a halt to the release of Palestinian prisoners and detainees to be released under the ceasefire, in retaliation for public displays of Israeli hostages handed over in exchange in Gaza.
