Trump administration blocks foreign student enrollment at Harvard

The Trump administration has blocked the enrollment of foreign students at Harvard University, targeting a key source of funding for the nation's oldest and wealthiest college, the New York Times reported, in a significant escalation in the standoff between the White House and the university, which has so far refused to meet the administration's demands regarding its academic curriculum, admissions policies and faculty hiring, A2 CNN writes.

The administration notified Harvard of the decision after a lengthy debate in recent days over the legality of a request for documents as part of the Department of Homeland Security investigation.

“I am writing to inform you that, effective immediately, the Harvard University Student and Exchange Visitor Program is being revoked,” said a letter sent to the university by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. A copy of the letter was obtained by The New York Times.

According to university enrollment data, about 6,800 international students attended Harvard this year, or about 27 percent of the student body. In 2010, they represented about 19.7 percent. Annual tuition is $59,320 and can go up to almost $87,000, including room and board, A2 CNN reports.

Meanwhile, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warned that Donald Trump's ban on enrolling foreign students at Harvard could be extended to other colleges in the US.

"This is a warning to all universities," she said in an interview with Fox News. "Harvard leadership has created an unsafe environment on campus by allowing anti-American and pro-terrorist agitators to harass and physically assault individuals, including many Jewish students," Noem's department said.
