Ukraine strongly opposes Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's plan to create a buffer zone on the border. In a response to the X, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha noted that: "These new aggressive demands are a clear rejection of peace efforts and show that Putin is and remains the sole reason for the ongoing killings." Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha also stated that more pressure should be put on Putin to end this war. The ministry spokesman noted that Putin could create the buffer zone on his territory.

After visiting the Kursk region, which has been partially controlled by Ukrainian troops for months, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the creation of a buffer zone “along the border.” The decision on the security zone has been made, Putin said at a government meeting via video. He did not initially say where exactly the zone would lie, how long it would be or how deep it would reach into Ukraine. “Our armed forces are in the process of solving this task, enemy firing points are being actively suppressed, and work is underway,” he said.

Putin declared the Kursk region liberated after Ukrainian troops invaded in August last year. In contrast, Ukraine accused Putin of lying. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly said that his troops still hold positions in the Kursk region and the neighboring Belgorod region, writes A2 CNN.

Putin also ordered the immediate development of a comprehensive program to begin the reconstruction of border regions affected by the fighting. In addition to the Kursk and Belgorod regions, this also includes the Bryansk region. The border regions are under almost daily attacks by the Ukrainian side, which mainly uses drones.

Meanwhile, Russian officials say there are currently no plans for President Vladimir Putin to travel to the Vatican or elsewhere for talks on ending the war in Ukraine. Instead, they are focused on technical negotiations that began last week in Istanbul, according to people familiar with the situation. The Kremlin expects those negotiations to resume in Istanbul, one of the people said. (A2 Televizion)
