Alarm for a suspicious object, the American Consulate in Berlin is evacuated

German police were called today to investigate a suspicious letter that had arrived at the US consulate in Berlin, a suspicion that led to the evacuation of the building by embassy staff.

But the alarm was quickly put out after police allowed the offices to reopen after an investigation. "It was a completely harmless object," a police spokesman said after the two-hour operation, without giving further details.

Police were notified of the suspicious letter at around 11:55 a.m. The consulate's mail section was evacuated and experts from the State Bureau's Institute of Criminal Investigation in Berlin examined the letter, according to police.

Postal department employees were ordered to evacuate and access to the side of the building where that service is provided was blocked.

The US embassy building in Germany is located in central Berlin, near the iconic Brandenburg Gate, but consular services are located in an annex in the southwestern neighborhood of Dahlem. (A2 Televizion)
