Vice President JD Vance and other officials have just begun their visit to Pituffik Space Base, home to U.S. Space Force and Air Force personnel.
According to foreign media, the unique location of this base, 'top of the world', according to the US Space Force website, makes it a favorable position for military defense.
Experts say that missiles launched by Russia and China towards the US are most likely to be detected there first.
"It's literally the outermost eye of American defense," Peter Ernstved Rasmussen, a Danish defense analyst, told the New York Times. "Pituffik is where the U.S. can detect a launch, calculate the trajectory, and activate its missile defense systems. It's irreplaceable," he added.
The icy military base — "enclosed by ice nine months a year" — conducts missile warning, missile defense and space surveillance missions, according to the USSF. (A2 Televizion)
