North Korea has conducted the first test of the weapons system of its newest and most advanced warship, the Choe Hyon. The news was announced by the state news agency KCNA, which reported that the test was closely watched by the country's leader, Kim Jong-un, along with senior military officials.
During the test, the ship launched cruise missiles, anti-aircraft missiles and artillery shells. Kim declared that it was time for the North Korean Navy to accelerate nuclear armament, in the name of protecting maritime sovereignty and national security.
According to state media and analysis of satellite images by research institutes in the US and South Korea, the "Choe Hyon" is a ship weighing about 5,000 tons and 140 meters long.
It is thought to be equipped with missile launch systems and, according to reports from the American website NK News, can also carry short-range tactical nuclear missiles.
The ship is expected to enter service early next year and will play, according to KCNA, a key role in national defense as part of the "nuclear deterrence" strategy. (A2 Televizion)
