A Ukrainian parliamentarian and other officials were arrested after the country's anti-corruption agencies uncovered what they call a massive corruption scheme in the purchase of drones and electronic warfare systems.
In a statement on the X social network, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that a lawmaker, several regional leaders, administrators, and members of the National Guard had been exposed for their involvement in the scheme, which included state contracts with suppliers at 30 percent inflated prices.
Zelensky made it clear that there will be zero tolerance for corruption in Ukraine as he thanked the agencies for their work. The independence of the country's anti-corruption agencies was restored on Thursday after nationwide protests, writes a2 CNN.
Zelensky's government faced strong criticism after introducing a bill that would strip the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, known as NABU and SAP, respectively.
The president claimed that agencies should be purged of Russian influence, and sought to give the attorney general authority over who should be investigated in cases of high-level corruption, A2 CNN reports.
Many saw the move as a setback in the fight against corruption that led to the largest anti-government protests since the start of the war. Zelenskyy has succumbed to public anger and introduced a new bill that would restore the agencies' independence. (A2 Televizion)
