The Israeli government and Hamas have agreed to a deal that will halt fighting in Gaza and lead to the phased release of Palestinian hostages and prisoners, a source briefed on the talks told CNN.
Under the agreement, which has not yet been officially announced, Hamas and allied militant groups are expected to release 33 hostages captured by Israel during the attacks of October 7, 2023.
In exchange, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, writes A2 CNN.
The agreement would provide the first pause from the war for the people of Gaza in more than a year, and only the second since the start of the Israeli bombardment.
Once confirmed, the deal is expected to allow Palestinian civilians to return to northern Gaza and there will be a massive influx of humanitarian aid into the Strip, where residents have long faced dire humanitarian conditions.
Meanwhile, this agreement has also been confirmed by US President-elect Donald Trump, who has said that the hostages in the Middle East will be released very soon. (A2 Televizion)
