American billionaire and now one of the important officials of the Trump administration, Elon Musk, called for the closure of US-funded media outlets, Radio Free Europe and Voice of America. Responding to comments by US presidential special envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, Musk wrote on X: "Yes, close them. Europe is free now (not counting the stifling bureaucracy). Nobody listens to them anymore. They are just crazy radical leftists talking to themselves while burning American taxpayer money. That's about $1 billion a year wasted," Musk writes.
Both Elon Musk and Richard Grenell have expressed strong opposition to government funding of media organizations, arguing that taxpayer money should not be used to support these media outlets.
Musk, as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has criticized federal payments to media organizations such as Politico, the Associated Press, and The New York Times, deeming them inefficient uses of taxpayer funds and moving to eliminate them.
Similarly, Grenell, as Trump's special envoy, has publicly condemned government spending on media subscriptions, echoing Musk's position that such funding should be immediately cut off.
These calls come amid broader scrutiny and controversy around government-funded media outlets, with the Trump administration taking steps to ban subscriptions to outlets like Politico.
