"I'm committed to buying Gaza," Trump announces new 25% tariffs

US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he will impose new tariffs of 25% on all steel and aluminum imports into the US, in addition to existing duties on the metals, further escalating his trade policy.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on his way to the NFL Super Bowl in New Orleans, Trump said he would announce new metal tariffs on Monday.

He also said he would announce reciprocal tariffs on Tuesday or Wednesday, which would take effect immediately, applying them to all countries and matching the tariffs imposed by each country.

"And quite simply, if they charge us, we charge them," Trump said of the reciprocal tariff plan.

The largest sources of U.S. steel imports are Canada, Brazil and Mexico, followed by South Korea and Vietnam, according to government data and the American Iron and Steel Institute.

By a wide margin, hydropower-rich Canada is the largest supplier of primary aluminum metal to the US, accounting for 79% of total imports in the first 11 months of 2024.

Trump then claimed that he was committed to acquiring and controlling Gaza, but could hand over some areas to other Middle Eastern countries to help with reconstruction.

On the trip to New Orleans, Trump declared February 9th as "America's Gulf Day" and signed the proclamation aboard Air Force One as his plane passed over those waters.

Mexico argues that the US cannot legally change the name of the Gulf because UN rules dictate that an individual country's sovereign territory extends only up to 12 nautical miles from the coastline.
