Austria and Greece join the countries that block the asylum requests of Syrians

After Germany, Austria, Greece, Denmark and Norway have also announced the suspension of asylum applications for Syrians, along with Sweden, which will also suspend deportation decisions.

The Austrian government has decided to stop the asylum applications of Syrian refugees and is preparing to "deport them", it said in a statement.

Greece has suspended the asylum applications of around 9,000 Syrians, Reuters Online reported, citing a high-level Greek government source.

Greek media reports that no asylum decisions will be issued for a certain period. The country is asking the EU to provide guidance on whether the grounds for international protection no longer apply after the fall of the Assad regime or whether protection remains valid.

At the same time, the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, is expected to engage with the new EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr. Brunner, before the Council of European Ministers of the Interior and Migration on Wednesday and Thursday in Brussels.

Denmark and Norway have also announced that they will suspend the processing of asylum applications from Syrian refugees "due to the very insecure situation in the country following the fall of the Assad regime".

Earlier, Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) temporarily suspended all processes for examining asylum applications from Syrians. (A2 Televizion)
