55 people have died after the bus they were traveling on fell from the Belize Bridge, at the northern entrance to Guatemala City, the capital of the Central American country.
Local media reported that 53 bodies had been recovered. The bus, with 75 passengers on board, ended up in the river below, while crossing the Belice bridge in the capital. According to some witnesses, the bus had collided with a car before falling off the bridge.
President Bernardo Arevalo sent the army and civil defense to provide assistance to the country. He also expressed his concern and solidarity with the relatives of the victims and declared three days of national mourning.
"Today is a difficult day for the Guatemalan family. The Belize bridge tragedy is a national pain," Arévalo said. (A2 Televizion)
