At least three people were killed and many others wounded when gunmen opened fire during a conference at Haiti's largest public hospital in Port-au-Prince. The attack happened on Tuesday, while journalists, doctors and police were waiting for the arrival of the Minister of Health, Lorthe Blema, to announce the reopening of the hospital.
According to reports, two journalists and a police officer are among the confirmed victims. The attack was carried out by members of the "Viv Ansanm" gang, while images published on the Internet show bloodied people inside the building.
The hospital was recaptured from gang control by the government in July, after a long period of occupation and destruction. However, the situation remains critical, as 85% of the capital Port-au-Prince continues to be under the control of criminal groups.
The head of the presidential transition council, Leslie Voltaire, condemned the attack and promised that the perpetrators would not go unpunished. Meanwhile, the people of Haiti continue to suffer from gang violence, which has escalated since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.
The United Nations reports that over 5,000 people have been killed this year alone, bringing the country to the brink of collapse. (A2 Televizion)
